The performance called “Frivol” was directed by Róbert Alföldi, and it was created with the participation of Bertalan Vári choreographer and members of the VARIDANCE Company.

God, Country, Family. And the story behind it. This is Hungary today, in folk dance, without words (almost) – stands in the recommender of the performance. “Frivol” touches on current issues affecting our age and society, such as exclusion, violence, power or the perceptions of gender roles.

The director, through satirical and dramatic scenes, mercilessly confront us with the dilemmas of our present. Furthermore invites us to think together about the idea of community, nation and culture in the unique language of folk dance.

Through satirical and dramatic scenes, the director mercilessly confronts the dilemmas of our present but at the same time invites us to think about community, nation and culture in the spectacular formal language of folk dance.

The choreographies of Bertalan Vári, an award-winning dancer, become a special dramaturgical tool of the performance, which further deepens the questions raised by the director. The coproduction of Róbert Alföldi and the VARIDANCE ensemble becomes an immersive work of art, which promises a memorable and meaningful experience, leads through dense emotional states, and argue the taboos that affect us all.

As Gábor Lénárt states it in his critical review: “The performance point out demagogy, meanwhile it wants to highlight the value in a situation where it takes courage today. Love which has been labelled different, having a child, exclusion, blaming the victim, suffering covert violence, sex change are all the themes of this frivolous game. Surprising episodes in which the director stretches the situation to the extreme to make an impact.”
